The new Chief of Staff of the Defense Forces has said that he will personally apologize to the Women of Honor, a group of women who have been accused of bullying, sexual abuse and harassment during their time in the Defense Forces. They will meet. Future.
Lt. Gen. Sean Clancy told RTÉ Radio’s News Eight One that he was already on the record expressing his deep concern and sadness over what happened, but would personally issue an apology. The women who spoke on a recent documentary on RTÉ surprised and “impressed” him.
The documentary, entitled Women of Honor, details detailed incidents of rape and rape, as well as discrimination and harassment of female soldiers, sailors and airmen.
In recent weeks, Defense Secretary Simon Cowney has announced the appointment of a secret liaison officer to receive allegations made by former and current military personnel.
Lt. Gen. Clancy said the problem of abuse and harassment in the defense forces was not just a historical issue, it was a current one. After taking over as chief of staff, he wrote to “every man and woman in the defense forces” outlining his views that such behavior would not be tolerated.
Lt. Gen. Clancy said he believes the majority in the defense forces would find such behavior offensive.
“These are living experiences, there is no reason to doubt them.”
However, he noted that the number of such incidents “clearly” could not be relied upon, given the reluctance of many to report for fear of retaliation. “Confidence and trust in our approach have eroded.”
He said that in order to deal with a problem, there should be awareness about the issue and no action can be taken without a record of the complaint.
If the standards were “passed,” they were “the best.”
Now a line was being drawn in the sand and an introduction to the secret complaint process would provide data to determine the extent of the problem.
She acknowledged that recruiting women has always been a challenge, and now it is even more so. “Women in the Women of Honor love the defense forces and want change so that more women can be recruited,” she said.
