Football focus: Alex Scott’s TV career, love life rumors and struggle with alcohol

Alexandra Wirina Scott MBE is a former England and Arsenal footballer and is now a regular pundit and TV presenter on the BBC and Sky Sports.

The 37-year-old from London, of Jamaican descent, learned that she had a Jewish background on the BBC’s Who Do You Think You Are Ancestry programme. Her mother is of Northern Irish, English and Lithuanian-Jewish heritage, while her father is Jamaican.

Alex made 140 appearances for the England national team in football and represented Great Britain at the 2012 Summer Olympics. She played with Arsenal’s various football clubs, where she scored the winning goal for the 2007 UEFA Women’s Cup Final, and Birmingham City for the Boston Breakers in the Women’s Professional Football League for America until her retirement in 2017.

After being named as the BBC’s first female pundit at the World Cup 2018, Alex Scott said she faced online abuse from trolls, which intensified when she joined the Sky Sports Super Sunday team.

Speaking to Mel’s Weekend magazine, Alex said: “I was drinking most nights. I would easily go through bottles to try and switch off.

“It was the only thing that could help me sleep or numb everything going on around me… It was death threats, abuse, all that.”

She continued: “I pulled myself away from everyone around me, not wanting to talk to anyone.”

Alex said drinking was “the opposite of her” and that she underwent therapy to help her deal with the issues of trolling.
