The Royal Institute of Architects has named the magnificent Dance Studio and Library Center at Kingston University London the best new building in the UK.RIBA).
Called the Town House, the exposed concrete-framed building was designed by Grafton Architects to blur the distinction between private and public spaces.
The 200-meter colonnade on the floor provides shade and shelter, with roofs and gardens above, while the rising glass pans reflect the ideas of creative activity within members of the public.
An open, public forum leads to an amphitheater space, with social and study spaces arranged at the top level. Spaces include an archive room, dance studio, theater and library – a wide variety of uses and requirements with acoustics carefully considered.

Professor Steven Spear, Vice-Chancellor of Kingston University London, said: “The Sterling Prize has endorsed the Town House as a world-class building and is therefore a perfect fit for our students’ aspirations, many of whom are their families. I am the first to go to university.
“It’s encouraging to observe creativity, collaboration and shared learning, inviting space to grow.”
