This comes after Academia posted a tweet on Sunday, January 9, which included the comment: “I just don’t see a case for why we should do anything but #KeepPrisonsSolo Sex ,

I have received several answers criticizing her idea, one of which said: “You are a TERF who cares more about punishing trans women than helping cis people. Hope this helps “

To which Prof Treadwell replied: “Isn’t ‘Terf’ a Trans Exclusive Radical Feminist? So I guess I’m not, but it’s good of you to give me a label that goes against harmful labels applied without consent.” Stands. Recipient’s…”

But the professor, who has been working at the uni since 2017, said he was yet to be told what the complaint was.

He tweeted on Wednesday, January 12, saying he was “angry and upset” and added: “Okay, I’m gone again. I don’t see why I can say now, but I hope so.” Some people can guess.

“I am available via email or to those who have my number. In the meantime keep on valuing rationality, independence and fair debate, that matters. Goodbye everyone. This time I can’t come back.”

He added later that same day: “Okay to hell with it. I’ve been told by my employer @StaffsUni Although only verbally that I am being investigated for transphobia after formal and official complaints about my Twitter conduct. Read my tweets go figure. It’s a good job cancellation culture is okay though, just a myth.

“I am angry and upset. Not only do I have no details of what this allegation is about, I have honestly tried to be balanced and fair and promote a fair debate. Let’s be clear again, everyone.” Trans people, like people, deserve respect and respect. Academics are also giving their personal views.

“This is where we are in the debate now. This is the scenario in which academia operates. I am quite savvy in the legalese that tries to act respectfully and decently. Hell yes, I am cruel, considerate and stubborn. Maybe. But I respect one’s right to disagree and take a different point of view.

“But we’ve entered a place where that’s not enough. Oddly enough, literally no one has contacted me directly to debate my stance or views. They’ve apparently gone to my employer.” And want to sanction or dismiss me. Nice to know how open and even politicized this is.

“That’s why I’m gone from Twitter at the end of it all. I’m just staying and keeping it for now because I’m worried and scared of the fight ahead, but I won’t shut up and quietly down.” I will never go back from the miscreants.

“But one last thing, because this bit really matters #academic, If this can happen to me, it can happen to any of you. It certainly can happen to young ECRs and others early in their careers. Universities want us on social media, but do you have your back covered? Who has it?”

A Staffordshire University spokesperson said: “We can confirm that we have received a complaint on Twitter regarding the views expressed by Professor Treadwell.

“As we normally do, it is in the process of being reviewed according to university procedures.

“As a university we are committed to equality, diversity and inclusion by ensuring that we foster a positive culture where everyone is capable of themselves. We are equally committed to academic freedom and legitimate freedom of speech Huh.

“We cannot comment further at this stage.”
