Work growing in popularity with Portugal topping the list of suitable locations

More employees have adopted a flexible work regime amid the coronavirus pandemic and one of the most popular has been the emergence of work – a holiday that blends leisure and remote work.

Travel search engine Kayak has identified the places best suited for remote work, with Portugal topping the list.

Kayak analyzed data from 111 countries and ranked each against 22 factors in six categories. These were: the cost and accessibility of the trip; local prices; Health & Safety; remote working capability; social life; and whether.

The study ranked those that offered the best work environment, while offering the best opportunities for employees’ free time.

Portugal was rated the overall best country to work remotely, scoring high in all categories, including great weather, high abundance of places to go out, low crime rate and relatively low cost of living. Portugal also offers a digital nomad visa, and many locals have high English proficiency which attracts expats.

Spain came in second, mainly due to the high volume of restaurants and cafes per capita, coupled with fast internet speeds, lots of co-working spaces and remote visas for freelancers.

Romania came in third, mainly because it offers very attractive prices when it comes to long-term apartment rents and local food.

In addition to the Work From Where Index, Kayak features: new time zone ranking To help users quickly and easily find the difference in their travel time – ideal for those looking to make 2am conference calls while working abroad.

The time zone-focused ranking takes the key factors and categories into account of the Work From Where Index, but displays them by country of origin. The tool also provides information on the latest travel restrictions and local vaccination rates per country.
